What is your Enneagram type? An excellent resource for self-awareness

I’m fascinated with personality tests and the psychology of what makes us tick. I know I’m an Enneagram One, but have wondered what it exactly means and how it integrates with other types. This book explains the nine types of Enneagram personalities and helps you figure out why you feel as if you repeatedly stumble into the same self-defeating patterns.

The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery [affiliate link] is a book to help you build self-awareness and also to understand others. The Enneagram is an ancient personality type system with an uncanny accuracy in describing how human beings are wired, both positively and negatively. In the book Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile present a practical, comprehensive way of accessing Enneagram wisdom and exploring its connections with Christian spirituality for a deeper knowledge of God and of ourselves.

The book gives examples of stories and examples from well-known people to help you analyze and understand. Each chapter begins with self-assessment questions, followed by an explanation of the type. It includes how each functioned as a child and  now as an adult in relationships and at work. Chapters end with tips for how to be a more healthy and functioning person within your type. Wondering what the 9 types are?

The Enneagram types:

Type One is principled, purposeful, self-controlled, and perfectionistic.

Type Two is generous, demonstrative, people-pleasing, and possessive.

Type Three is adaptable, excelling, driven, and image-conscious.

Type Four is expressive, dramatic, self-absorbed, and temperamental.

Type Five is perceptive, innovative, secretive, and isolated.

Type Six is engaging, responsible, anxious, and suspicious.

Type Seven is spontaneous, versatile, acquisitive, and scattered.

Type Eight is self-confident, decisive, willful, and confrontational.

Type Nine is receptive, reassuring, complacent, and resigned.

There are tests out there to help you determine your number, but save your cash and get this book instead. With the questions at the beginning of each chapter, you can self-test. The official test will help you figure out your type, but the results do not thoroughly explain your wing types or help you understand why you react in certain ways under stressful conditions. It also doesn’t help you understand the other types. This book is a resource to understand how to play nice with others. 🙂

It explains how your wing (secondary type) works, and the types that you go toward when stressed or happy.
